Since checking out my social bookmarking soulmate’s tags, I’ve been constantly looking on James Nachtwey’s website.  It’s like I’m in a trans when I’m there.  He has a way of convey words without saying them, conveying pain without having to see it…it’s just plain beautiful.  His photographs aren’t overly showy and gory so that you want to turn away.  He’s able to photograph a topic like Afganistan or AIDS and depict the pain and suffering these people experience without having to actually show over sensationalized scenes of devestation.  It’s a breath of fresh air from all the high emotion photographs you often see in the paper or in Time magazine.  Hopefully his process is the new wave of photojournalism.  He reminds me of Lewis Hine and how he chose to photograph immigrants just arriving from Ellis Island without having to portray them as either too eager or scared and frail.  He gave them the dignity that they deserve as human beings.  Nachtwey does the same for his subjects.  He doesn’t cut them down to size and sell.  Instead his silver black and white tones show natural beauty and give his subjects diginity and strength.  These are things that many photojournalists lack.
